Do you like exciting discussions or intense debates? Are you interested in social and political issues and do you like moral questions? Or would you rather prefer to learn how to find well reasoned arguments? To persuade others and give a good speech?
Than you are just right in joining our debates! In our club, you’ll get to know interesting students from all faculties, you’ll learn to speak confidently in front of an audience and you’ll train your abilities in structural and analytical thinking. Of course, you are also going to improve your English and a lot of other soft skills.
This is how we debate in our club:
– Debating is a team sport – at least nine people take part in a debate: Four on the pro side, four on the contra side and an impartial adjudicator
– At the beginning, we select the topic of the debate out of multiple suggestions and draw lots to assign everybody to the pro or contra side
– During the preparation time, everyone has 15 minutes to prepare his 7 minutes speech. Afterwards, the pro and contra teams present their speeches in an alternating order
– At the end, the adjudicator finds a ranking of the teams based on the quality of the given speeches and the validity of the presented arguments and gives feedback
– The debates on Monday are in German, the debates on Thursday in English. The debates are free and not compulsory – you can join us whenever you want
– We participate regularly in national and international tournaments (of course the participation is voluntary)
– After the debate you can join us for dinner and get to know us!
This is your way into debating:
– Attend our beginners debate on the first Monday (German) or on the first Thursday (English) each month. You’ll get an introduction into debating and you’ll have the chance to practice it directly
– If you got any questions, feel free to write us an email: debating@rwth-aachen.de and join us on Facebook for regular updates
We’re looking forward to meeting you!
